When people ask me where my strength and drive come from, my answer is simple: my family. I am blessed to have a loving and supportive family that has been by my side every step of the way. They’ve not only embraced my journey as a DeafPlus individual, but they’ve also actively helped shape the person I am today. This blog is a celebration of them and the role they play in empowering and educating families like ours.
Learning ASL: A Family Commitment
One of the first ways my family showed their unwavering support was by learning American Sign Language (ASL). Communication is the cornerstone of any strong relationship, and their willingness to learn ASL opened doors to deeper connections. It wasn’t just about signing words; it was about fostering understanding, sharing emotions, and building an environment where I felt seen, heard, and valued. Every conversation in ASL with my family reminds me of their love and dedication.
Creating an Accessible Home
My family has always prioritized making our home a place where I can thrive. From installing ramps to ensure I can move freely, to modifying our living spaces to suit my needs, their efforts have always been about creating a space that fosters independence. One of my favorite examples of this is the work my dad does—like clearing snow off my modified van so I can safely get to where I need to go. This van, with its ramp and special equipment, is my gateway to freedom, and knowing my family is there to support me keeps me going on even the toughest days.
Empowering Other Families
Our journey hasn’t always been easy, but it has taught us lessons we hope to share with other families who have a DeafPlus individual in their lives. Families like mine play a critical role in empowering DeafPlus individuals to live full and fearless lives. That empowerment starts at home—through communication, support, and unconditional love. My family and I are committed to helping other families understand that embracing accessibility and inclusion isn’t just necessary—it’s life-changing.
The Bond That Drives My Mission
The love and support of my family have been a constant source of strength, inspiring me to become an advocate for others. Their actions have taught me that change begins at home and that the smallest efforts can have the biggest impact. Because of them, I know the value of community and the importance of sharing these lessons with the world.
To any family reading this: you have the power to make a difference. By embracing your loved one’s unique needs, learning their language, and creating a safe and supportive environment, you’re not just helping them—you’re showing the world what unconditional love looks like.
Thank you, Mom, Dad, and everyone in my family, for showing me what love, support, and resilience mean. You are my foundation, and together, we’ll continue to empower and educate others to do the same.
