For me, exercise isn’t just about physical strength—it’s about resilience, determination, and proving to myself what’s possible. As a self-proclaimed “Wheelchair Gym Rat,” I’ve found a passion for fitness that fuels not only my body but my spirit as well. Through accessible gyms, a dedicated personal trainer, and a commitment to sharing my journey, I’m working to inspire others in the DeafPlus community to embrace the power of movement.
Accessible Gyms: Breaking Barriers
When I first stepped—or, rather, rolled—into my accessible gym, it was a game-changer. Equipped with specialized machines designed for wheelchair users, it showed me that fitness isn’t reserved for a select few—it’s something everyone can pursue. The adaptive equipment allows me to engage in a full range of exercises that target strength, endurance, and mobility. It’s a place where the barriers come down, and possibility takes center stage.
The Value of a Personal Trainer
Fitness is a journey, and I’m fortunate to have a personal trainer who helps guide me every step of the way. Together, we’ve built a workout program that’s tailored to my needs, pushing my limits while ensuring my safety. From strength training to cardio, my trainer not only assists with the physical aspects but also motivates me to keep going. It’s proof that having the right support can make all the difference.
Sharing the Journey
One of my favorite things about working out is sharing my journey with others. I post highlight videos of my workouts on social media, showing how accessible gyms work and what a typical session looks like for me. These posts aren’t just about showcasing what I can do—they’re about informing and inspiring others. I want DeafPlus individuals to see that fitness is for them, too, and that accessible gyms can help them lead healthier, more active lives.
Building Confidence Through Fitness
Exercise isn’t just about building muscle—it’s about building confidence. Every rep, every mile, and every moment in the gym reminds me that I’m capable of more than I sometimes give myself credit for. It’s a reminder that challenges can be overcome, one step—or roll—at a time. And when I feel strong, that confidence spills over into every other aspect of my life.
Inspiring a Healthier Community
My fitness journey isn’t just for me—it’s for the entire DeafPlus community. Through my posts and advocacy, I hope to show others that gyms like mine exist, and they’re waiting to welcome people of all abilities. Living a healthier life isn’t just about hitting the gym; it’s about believing in your potential and finding the resources to unlock it.
A Passion for Sports
When I’m not in the gym or on the court, you’ll often find me immersed in the world of sports. Whether I’m watching games, analyzing highlights, or chatting with friends, sports have always been a big part of my life. In fact, I co-host a weekly NFL talk show in ASL with my dad where we dive into the week’s most exciting games, interesting highlights, and all things football. It’s not just about entertainment—it’s about making sports accessible and engaging for the DeafPlus community.
For me, sports and fitness go hand in hand. They’re both about determination, teamwork, and pushing boundaries. Whether I’m lifting weights or discussing the latest touchdown, I’m constantly reminded of the power of passion and perseverance.
